The Future Heavies
Shawn Persigner - guitar, vocals (2015-2016)
By 1984, at the age of 13, guitarist Shawn Persinger was listening exclusively to punk (The Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, Black Flag, etc.), 20th century classical music (Igor Stravinsky mostly), avant-jazz (Henry Threadgill et al.), and fingerstyle virtuoso Leo Kottke. Shawn had little or no interest in Top 40 pop music. Thus he was the perfect addition to The Future Heavies radio-friendly sound as their founding guitar player...for scraping off their smooth edges.
Shawn began his career in 1991 after graduating from Musicians Institute in Los Angeles. As a composer and performer he has had his music performed innumerable times, in varying ensembles, on five continents, in 36 countries, and countless cities. He continues to tour and perform constantly around the world.
Shawn has also been featured, reviewed, and/or interviewed in Guitar Player Magazine, Guitar Shop, Guitar World, and Premier Guitar. In 2004, Acoustic Guitar magazine named his solo recording The Art of Modern Primitive Guitar one of the best CDs of the year.
As a music educator, Shawn has taught thousands of students and directed multifarious ensembles and group workshops. He has also written articles, features, and lessons for Guitar Player, Frets, and Taylor Guitars "Wood & Steel." He is a faculty member of Guitar Intensives in Bar Harbor, Maine; The Center for Creative Youth in Middletown, Connecticut; and has served on the faculty at the National Guitar Workshop.
His books include The 50 Greatest Guitar Books, Bebop Jazz Guitar, "The Young Person's Guide to Free Improvisation and Experimental Music," and "The Uncommon Guitar Lesson."
